Golakes Algorithm

Ordering of accommodation on Golakes

At present the order of accommodation on the golakes website is sorted by publishing option (gold & silver together then bronze) and then by last updated (with the most recently updated at the top of the list).  An update can be made by phone, web, fax or guestlink desktop. 

Some providers were updating their availability hundreds of times each day just to secure the top spot on the first page of the golakes property search results (rather than because their availability had changed).  Cumbria Tourism made changes to the algorithm in October 2006 to deter such excessive updating whilst still encouraging legitimate updating.

The new updating system works as follows; if a provider updates their availability they will move to the top of their publishing option if it is more than 1 hour since they last updated and they have not already moved up the list 8 times that day.  Any updates made within the hour that they have updated will be registered normally without affecting their position or being taken from one of the 8 daily updates. All updates will be registered so availability can be kept up to date as normal, it just means that more people will get a chance to be at the top of the search results page. This will not affect any other DMS driven websites at the moment.

Step 1: 30/09/06 at 09:00 provider updates their availability. The system registers this as the first update of the day and the property moves to the top of their publishing option (gold,silver or bronze).

Step 2: 30/09/06 at 09.32 provider updates their availability. The system registers the change in availability but does not move the property to the top of the publishing option as it has been less than an hour since the first update.

Step 3: 30/09/06 at 10:07 provider upates their availability. The system registers this as the second update of the day as it has been more than one hour since the first update was registered. The property moves to the top of their publishing option.

Step 4: 30/09/06 at 13.20 provider updates their availability. The system registers this as the third update of the day as it has been more than one hour since the second update was registered. The property moves to the top of their publishing option.

Step 5: 30/09/06 at 13:34 provider updates their availability. The system registers the change in availability but does not move the property to the top of the publishing option as it has been less than an hour since the third (last) update.

Step 6: 30/09/06 at 13:58 provider updates their availability. The system registers the change in availability but does not move the property to the top of the publishing option as it has been less than an hour since the third (last) update.

Step 7: 30/09/06 at 14:40 provider updates their availability. The system registers this as the fourth update of the day as it has been more than one hour since the third (last) update was registered. The property moves to the top of their publishing option.

To register updates there needs to be at least one hour between each update. Updates within the hour will change your availability but not affect your establishments position on the golakes website.
